The month of Ramadhan in year 2021 falls on the mid-month of April to mid-month of May when those who celebrate it will do the fasting.
During fasting, I will not only hold myself from eating and drinking, but also, it’s the time to re-evaluate myself to be humbler, more patience as well as to be more kind to others.
Break fasting is one of the agendas been waiting for everyone, I guess not only to enjoy several Ramadhan delicacies but also to meet families, friends and colleagues.
With the current situation whereby health protocol must strictly be applied, I must say that the happiness and enjoyment during break fasting can still be created although with limited number of people.
It is a tradition that break fasting will start with something sweet, refreshing or is also known as ‘takjil’’ which can drive appetite for the heavy meals later.
Here, I want to explore several Ramadhan delights for takjil so you can try and enjoy.
1. Dates
Dates are sweet fruits and categorized as energy-rich snacks which are high in natural sugar and yet highly nutrition. There are many types of dates available in the market, so choose what you like and what you wish to spend.
Drink a warm water and take one of my favorite dates for break fasting, then I can feel my body relieves.
2. Savory fried fritters
This is one of the famous takjil likeable by almost everyone. Not really healthy snacks though but there is something missing if I don’t include fried fritters in my takjil list. Savory fried fritters are commonly known as street food, but during Ramadhan, you will also find selection of fried fritters in many hotels, including 5 Star hotels.
The choices can be from fried tofu, vegetables fritter, fried tempeh, filled tofu fritters and many others. Select the place to buy fried fritters that is clean, and fritters are well fried and not too greasy.
3. Es campur or Indonesian cold and sweet dessert
Indonesia cold and sweet dessert or also known as ‘es campur’ is amongst Ramadhan delights not-to-miss for break fasting. Es campur is one of typical Indonesian drinks made by mixing of ingredients, such as, coconut, jackfruit, black grass jelly showered with ice, syrup and sweet condensed milk.

These desserts are actually available in the market throughout the year but people mainly tend to consume more during Ramadhan month.
You can also try other drinks and dessert, such as, ice mix fruits with syrup and shaved ice, cendol ice, cold green bean porridge, black sticky rice porridge with ice, grass jelly ice, young coconut ice and the list will continue.
4. Kolak
Kolak is another Indonesian sweet contains of bananas, sweet potatoes, pumpkins or fermented cassava and made with coconut milk, palm sugar and sometimes, scented with pandan leaves.
Kolak taste is mostly very sweet so you will need to manage the consumption to have your food balance. For me, I would prefer to add plenty of ice cube to reduce the sweetness which will taste better.
5. Bajigur and bandrek beverages
Bajigur and bandrek are good option of beverages for break fasting because it’s served hot and has sweet taste. Bandrek will also have spicy taste from the mix of ginger. These two beverages are native to Sundanese of West Java province of Indonesia.
Now, you can also find bajigur and bandrek drinks packaged in sachet which are easier to bring everywhere.
6. Variety of cakes and pudding
Why not trying several slices of cakes and pudding for break fasting? The choices can range from black forest, tiramisu, chocolate layers cake, vanilla sponge, fruit pudding, butterscotch pudding, and many other choices.
Try selection of mini slices of cakes, so your stomach will not full and can still enjoy other delicacies.
7. Fried bananas fritter
Banana is one of the fruits that you can eat directly or can become ingredient for dessert. Banana as sweet dessert will become one of the choices for break fasting. One of the famous desserts is fried bananas fritter. You can enjoy it with ice cream, sprinkled of chocolate or filled with melted cheese to give different sensation.
8. Choices of fruits
Fresh fruits are always my favorite specially those contains quite a lot of water because they are good to reducee dehydration. Choose refreshing fruits to break your fasting because they tend to be lighter, such as, watermelon, strawberry, cantaloupe, peaches, oranges and apples.
9. Fruit juices
Fresh fruit juices can also become an option for breaking a fast. Not only it is healthy but also can help to recharging your energy back. Try fresh fruit juices that are watery such as watermelon, cantaloupe, orange to freshen and with low calorie too.
10. Mouthwatering biscuits
When breaking a fast, try some light snacks such as date biscuits, chocolate chip cookies, oreo cookies, cinnamon cookies and any other selections. You can choose from less sugar, gluten free to no added eggs to maintain your body intake while at the same time, still enjoying the sweet taste of snacks.
So, which Ramadhan delight that you like?
Enjoy the delicious taste of Ramadhan takjil and happy fasting.
