Do it myself - Hair Colouring

Photographer: Evi AzhaliMy work dateline is almost due, it is quite hard for me to find a spare time to go to my favourite hair salon. But then, it is also the time for my hair colouring, either to highlight the grey hair or just want to change the colour. What shall I do ?
I have tried colouring my hair (Do It Myself at home) several times and am happy with the result. Please choose the normal colour for ‘Do It Myself Hair Colouring’, such as black, brown (dark brown, light brown, violet brown), or maroon. This is because several unique colours such as yellow, green, white, blue will require to go through several processes that is best to be done in a hair salon.
The estimate time to ‘Do It Myself Hair Colouring’ is approximately 3 hours which include washing hair before and after colouring process as well as any necessary preparation needed.
Here are the list of things we will need to prepare in advance,
- Hair Colouring Cream. The length of my hair is almost reaching my back and a little wavy which require one and a half to two tube of hair colouring cream. To give a different look and depend on my mood, I usually mix 2 different colours for example, dark brown with light brown, black with maroon, dark brown with black, violet brown with black. Please note that black dye tends to be dominant, so the hair will still look darker although we mix black colour with dark brown or light brown
- Cream Developer
- Protective Pre-colour Serum to be applied on to hair prior to hair colouring process
- Comb Hair Polish (brush on one side and comb on the other side)
- Hairpin
- Towel
- Plastic Hand Gloves
- Small bowl for hair dye
- My favourite Shampoo and Hair Conditioner
I usually buy hair colouring in a box of package which already consist of hair colouring cream, cream developer, protective pre-colour serum, hair conditioner, plastic hand gloves and the guidance on how to use it. This allows me to have better and easier preparation.
‘Do It Myself Hair Colouring’ process is simple and fast, so let’s start.
- Wash your hair with your favourite shampoo and do not use conditioner or use shampoo that already contain conditioner.
- Semi-dry your hair using a towel, then continue using a hair dryer and a round comb until the hair is well dry and also to make your hair more manageable. With a wavy hair like mine, I will also use a straight
ener after hair dryer to make my hair easier to comb and to apply the hair dyer.
- Mix the hair colouring cream and cream developer in a bowl, then stir until evenly distributed.
- First step is to apply the protective pre-colour serum into several sections of hair gradually and distribute it by hand. Do not forget to already wear the plastic hand gloves and a towel to cover your shoulder to keep your hand and your clothes clean.
- Then, start to apply the hair colouring cream little by little with the comb hair polish (brush side) and smooth it with a comb. After the dye cream has been applied on all your hair, take the rest of the dye cream by hand and massage evenly. Lift the hair and tie it with hairpin, and leave it for about an hour
Why I am happy to ‘Do It Myself Hair Colouring’ at home ? This is because I can do other things while waiting for an hour to end. I can read my favourite novel, do my writing, cooking or also follow up my pending tasks on laptop
- It’s already an hour now and it’s time to wash your hair.

- First, damp and wash your hair with cold water to remove residual hair dye. Then, apply your favourite shampoo, wash and rinse thoroughly. Repeat this process one more time to ensure that the hair is clean from any remaining dye cream. Afterwards, apply conditioner into the hair ends and leave it briefly. Rinse hair until completely clean. It is really important to rinse your hair thoroughly to avoid hair getting damaged when drying.
- So, the ‘Do It Myself Hair Colouring’ process is almost completed. Finally, you can now dry your hair with any hairstyle you prefer.
The process is simple and easy, isn’t it ?
